| CustodialHistory | The Cumberland Papers were first stored at Cumberland Lodge before entering the Royal Library sometime between 1830 and 1860. They were later transferred to the Royal Archives, when the latter was established. The four-page description of the Duke’s library at Windsor Great Lodge dating from the mid-18th Century (CP/VOL/1A) describes the arrangement of the collection – books, maps, office papers, manuscript books and papers relating to Windsor Forest, and accounts relating to military operations. It states that the Official papers were divided into two general sections: “The Letters” of the King’s ministers and enclosures, arranged by date in alphabetical order by author, and “Various Papers” arranged by subject matter. Both are included in a catalogue, listed alphabetically and with reference to their location – Division, Drawer and bundle. The numerous papers relating to America, Scotland and Ireland are each listed alphabetically in the catalogue. |
