TitleLetter from Lord Derby to General Grey
Date27 April 1867
WriterDerby, Edward, 14th Earl of
AddresseeGrey, Charles, General; Private Secretary
DescriptionEdward Geoffrey, 14th Earl Derby to General Grey on the improvement in his health. Lord Derby's hopes of the success of the Parliamentary Reform Bill. Position as between Conservative and Liberal parties. His view of Mr W.E. Gladstone - the impossibility of calculating beforehand the movements of one so excitable and impulsive. His great distrust of him - shared by Lord Palmerston. Latter's (unfulfilled) intention of writing to Queen Victoria, telling her whom she might and might not trust, and specially warning her against Gladstone. Lord Derby's greater hopes of the preservation of peace, in view of Bismarck's unexpectedly conciliatory language (in relation to Luxembourg). Report of George V, Ex-King of Hanover, being on his way to England. Probably a surprise and 'not a very agreeable one' to Her Majesty.
