DescriptionMr Gathorne Hardy's acceptance of the Home Office. Lord Devon's (William Reginald Courtenay, 21st Earl of Devon) readiness to accept the Presidency of the Poor Law Board, on the promotion of Mr Gathorne Hardy. Lord Derby's offer ('after Mr Gladstone's agitating speech') of the Duchy of Lancaster, with a seat in cabinet, to Lord Hugh Lupus Grosvenor (after Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster), on its vacation by Lord Devon. The improbability of his accepting it. Sir R. Peel and Lord Stanhope suggested in the event of his refusal. Queen Victoria asked for her preference between them. Lord Stanley requested by Lord Derby to furnish Queen Victoria with 'more immediate information' as to the business done by the Foreign Office.
