DescriptionMr Gladstone's query as to Queen Victoria's wishes regarding a reference in the Speech from the Throne to her absence from the Opening of Parliament. Gavin Campbell, 7th Earl of Breadalbane (after 1st Marquess, 2nd creation), proposed as one of Queen Victoria's Lords-in-Waiting, to succeed Lord Huntly (resigned). Right Honourable Sir A.E. Cockburn (Baronet), Lord Chief Justice of England, recommended for a Grand Cross (G.C.B.) extraordinary, in view of the list being full. Mr Gladstone's willingness to advise a Peerage, but not desired by him.
