Description
Every effort being made to carry out Queen Victoria's wishes in regard to the Governorship of Madras (India). Office in the gift of the Secretary of State. Lord Salisbury (Robert, 3rd Marquis of Salisbury) 'has no petty views' regarding appointments in his gift, 'and is quite superior to any personal considerations.' Critical state of affairs there. Mr Disraeli on Lord Derby's willingness to co-operate in arranging for the removal of A.H. Layard from Madrid, if possible. Suggestion as to his going to Madras.
